Telford merges with Lincoln University

Telford Rural Polytechnic and Lincoln University will merge on January 1, the Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce has announced.

Mr Joyce said Cabinet had accepted a proposal from the institutions for the merger, a move set to create a larger institution with a stronger base to support education, research, and knowledge transfers across the land-based sector.

"I expect the merger will improve the speed, reach, and effectiveness of knowledge transfer” he said.

Mr Joyce said Lincoln was a strong institution dedicated to supporting the land-based sectors, and the merger with Telford Rural Polytechnic should strengthen educational provision in terms of scale, reach, and relationships with the sectors it served.

Lincoln Vice-Chancellor Roger Field said it would be "business as usual" at both institutes for 2011. The university was committed to retaining Telford's courses.
